How do you lift a large, complex structure like the center section of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope? Northrop Grumman engineers invented a Variable Center of Gravity Mechanism (VCGM) to lift Webb’s composite structures. Hansen’s Welding and Bearing Engineers, small businesses in Southern California, partnered with Northrop Grumman to build the 6 feet by 8 feet VCGM fixture that will be used on many future lifts of Webb Telescope hardware.
